The Jill Venable case had very few similarities with my mother’s.

Jill was single, older, and had been stabbed to death. From what I was able to gather, it happened late at night. And most importantly, they’d caught the man responsible for it: Dale Collier.

Rachel Tatum didn’t think so. She thought Dale was being railroaded. I told myself to take everything Rachel said with a grain of salt. Her law firm was dedicated to freeing the wrongly convicted. Of course, she was going to have a bias toward believing people were innocent.

That didn’t mean she was wrong.

Jill had been a life coach and public speaker. Nowadays, those are a dime a dozen, but back in 2007 when she was killed, they weren’t nearly as ubiquitous. She specialized in helping people get back into the workforce after getting out of jail or quitting a nasty alcohol or drug habit.

On the night of January 28th, 2007, someone broke into her house and stabbed her to death. Jill wasn’t found for three days. A relative had called for a welfare check, and that’s when the police found her body. She’d been stabbed over thirty times.

No, I wasn’t a cop, but usually, when someone is stabbed that many times, law enforcement tends to believe it to be a crime of passion.

Which is likely what led them to Dale Collier.

Dale and Jill had dated for ten years before breaking it off slightly over a year before she died.

They met when they were both in their mid-forties, and both had grown children from previous relationships. That probably explained why they’d dated so long without getting married.

The breakup wasn’t a good one, which didn’t bode well for Dale once Jill was stabbed thirty times.
